What Is AREX?
AREX is the airport railroad connecting Incheon Airport with central Seoul. Its two services solve different travel problems.
Express Train
The Express Train runs from Terminal 2 through Terminal 1 to Seoul Station without intermediate passenger stops. It uses a separate ticket and provides an assigned seat, making it the predictable option for a direct Seoul Station or KTX plan.
All-Stop Train
The All-Stop Train serves every AREX station, including Gimpo Airport, Hongik University and Gongdeok. It works like commuter rail, accepts T-money and often removes unnecessary backtracking through Seoul Station.
AREX matters because “Seoul” is not one destination. Hongdae, Gongdeok and Gimpo Airport are directly on the All-Stop route, while Seoul Station connects onward to Subway Lines 1 and 4 and KTX. The fastest train to Seoul Station is not always the fastest route to your hotel.
Decision rule
If the station-to-hotel route includes a difficult transfer, stairs or a long walk with luggage, compare all Incheon Airport transfer options. An airport bus can reduce station handling, while an official taxi can provide the simplest late-night or door-to-door backup.

AREX Price Guide
Express uses a fixed selling fare between Seoul Station and either airport terminal. All-Stop uses a distance-based commuter fare, so T2 costs more than T1 for the same Seoul destination.
Express Train fare
AREX lists an adult selling fare of ₩13,000 and a child fare of ₩9,500. The same selling fare applies at T1 and T2 because Express uses a separate reserved ticket rather than a distance-based transit-card fare. The operator also displays higher normal fares, so check the official price for your travel date instead of relying on an old third-party ₩9,500 adult price.
All-Stop fare
All-Stop uses distance-based adult fares for prepaid and postpaid transit cards. From T1, the fare is ₩4,750 to Seoul Station and ₩4,650 to Hongik University; from T2, it is ₩5,350 and ₩5,250. T2 costs ₩600 more on both sample trips because it is farther along the route. Check the official fare table for any other destination.
T-money versus a single-use card
Use T-money by tapping in and out on the All-Stop Train; Express requires its own reserved ticket. If you buy an adult single-use transportation card instead, AREX adds ₩100 to the transit-card fare and collects a ₩500 refundable deposit. After you exit at your destination, insert the single-use card into a deposit refund machine to receive the ₩500 back.
Payment and booking check
The official booking screen lists ₩13,000 for a nonmember adult, ₩12,500 for a member and ₩9,500 for a child. After online payment, open the QR ticket on your phone or print the home ticket, then scan it directly at the Express gate without exchanging it at a machine. AREX lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, American Express and UnionPay among supported foreign-issued cards, but does not guarantee approval by every card issuer. If payment is declined, try another supported card or buy the ticket at an Express ticket machine or customer center. For All-Stop, AREX station machines can sell a single-use transportation card by credit card; T-money is a separate option, so learn how to buy and use T-money before relying on it.

AREX Time Guide
The official train time is not the same as the time from the aircraft door to your hotel door.
From Terminal 1
Express reaches Seoul Station in 43 minutes. All-Stop is scheduled for 59 minutes, with some services taking 2–6 minutes longer.
From Terminal 2
Express reaches Seoul Station in 51 minutes. All-Stop is scheduled for 66 minutes, with some services taking 2–6 minutes longer.
Add the walk from the arrival hall to the station, ticket purchase or card setup, waiting time, the transfer inside Seoul Station or another hub, and the final walk to the hotel. Express can save main-ride time but lose its advantage if you must backtrack from Seoul Station.

Express serves the two airport terminals and Seoul Station. All-Stop adds the intermediate stations that can make a hotel route much easier.

How to Find AREX at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
Both terminals have their own AREX station. Confirm your terminal and follow Airport Railroad signs instead of copying directions for the other building.
Terminal 1

- Enter the public arrival hall and follow Airport Railroad / AREX signs.
- Move to the Terminal 1 Transportation Center and rail area.
- Choose the separate Express or All-Stop entrance before paying.

How to Buy a Ticket
Decide which train you need before approaching a machine or gate. Express and All-Stop do not use the same ticket.
Express online reservation
Reserve on the official AREX website or app by selecting the terminal, travel date, train and passengers. The official system accepts reservations up to 20 minutes before departure and up to 60 days ahead. Payment creates a ticket with a QR code, train, car and assigned seat.
Express at the station
Use an Express ticket machine or customer information center at T1, T2 or Seoul Station. Supported foreign-issued cards include major international networks listed by AREX. A station-issued Express ticket remains separate from T-money.
All-Stop single-use card
Choose the destination at an All-Stop ticket machine, pay the fare plus the deposit, keep the card through the trip and refund the deposit after exiting. Credit-card purchase is available at AREX station machines, but carrying a backup payment method is sensible.
All-Stop with T-money
Make sure the balance covers the trip, then tap at the All-Stop gate and tap out at the destination. Do not scan a T-money card at an Express-only gate expecting it to act as an Express ticket.
Changes and returns
The official booking site provides ticket change and return functions, and may show a fee before confirmation. Review the current conditions before paying and complete any change before the stated departure cutoff rather than relying on an old reseller rule.

Seoul Station Transfers and What Happens Next
Reaching Seoul Station ends the airport train ride, but it does not end the trip for most travelers.
Subway Lines 1 and 4
Line 1 serves several central and eastern connections. Line 4 is the usual subway continuation toward Myeongdong and Dongdaemun-area stations. Follow signs for the correct line and direction rather than assuming every subway entrance leads to the same platform.
KTX and national rail
Do not build a tight KTX connection from the published AREX arrival minute. Include platform exit, elevators or escalators, ticket checks and movement through the station with luggage.
Myeongdong and nearby hotels
Continue on Line 4 or use a short surface connection that fits the exact hotel. The best choice depends on the exit, final walk and whether lifting luggage through another transfer is practical.
Station walking burden
AREX platforms are deep within a large complex. Allow extra time for elevators, corridors and finding the next service, especially with children, a stroller, limited mobility or several suitcases.
Use Korean map apps to verify the hotel pin, station exit and final walk. An area name alone is not enough to judge the transfer.
City Airport Terminal is for departure
The Seoul Station City Airport Terminal is not an arrival service. It is available to eligible same-day international passengers using the Express Train, and participating airlines vary. Check the official eligibility and airline list before planning check-in or baggage drop there.

Luggage, Families and Accessibility
A reserved seat helps only after boarding. The difficult part may be reaching the platform and changing trains in Seoul.
Express
Assigned seating and dedicated luggage space make the main ride more predictable. You must still move every bag through the airport station, Seoul Station and any next connection.
All-Stop
It operates like a commuter train. A seat is not guaranteed, and crowding can make large bags, a stroller or supervising children more difficult.
Elevators and transfers
Check elevators at the arrival station and the route to the next line. Seoul Station is large, so build in extra walking time for a stroller, wheelchair or several suitcases.
When to change modes
Choose a verified airport bus stop or appropriately sized official taxi when repeated lifting, long corridors or the final outdoor walk creates more burden than the rail saving is worth.
SECTION 12
First Train, Last Train and Late-Night Arrivals
AREX does not run 24 hours. Use the official timetable for your terminal and date, then calculate from arrival-hall exit time—not landing time.
The official Express timetable lists the first airport departures at 05:16 from T2 and 05:24 from T1, and the last at 22:40 from T2 and 22:48 from T1. All-Stop departures follow a different timetable and can change, so check the official dated AREX timetable instead of copying a saved screenshot.
- Start with the scheduled landing time.
- Add immigration, baggage claim, customs and the walk to the station.
- Allow time to buy the correct ticket and reach the correct platform.
- Check the live T1 or T2 departure—not the other terminal.
- Save a backup that works after the time you can actually board.
If the last train no longer works
Check an official night bus or other airport bus option. If no suitable service remains, use an official airport taxi stand or a verified pickup with clear meeting and delay terms.
